Massage is an ancient healing art with its earliest roots in medicine.  Today, massage is a key element in one's overall strategy for good health and well-being. A way of connecting one’s body, mind and soul. A way of dealing with chronic pain; a pain management tool. • Fuels the muscles with fresh oxygen and nutrients
  • Flushes away waste products
  • Releases physical tension and soothes the nerves
  • Increases the ability to think clearly
  • Helps relieve tension headaches and sore backs
  • Helps improve athletic performances and prevent injuries

Massage for Pregnant Women

This treatment is done with concern in mind for the woman and the child in the womb.  It is a combination of massage, pressure, passive movement and essential oils.  This treatment is relaxing.  It helps to release tension and fatigue while easing muscular and joint pain caused by postural changes and weight gained during pregnancy.  The impact of massage therapy on preventing or minimizing many of the common discomforts is profound.  Regular massage can make the difference between a comfortable, low-stress pregnancy, or one defined by miserable aches and pains.

More benefits of massage during pregnancy:

  • Being massaged during pregnancy reduces obstetric and postnatal complications.  During childbirth, women who were massaged felt less pain and spent less time in labor.
  • Massage has a direct influence on the ambiotic environment and therefore the development of the fetus.
  • Specific essential oils can help alleviate morning sickness.  Other essential oils help prevent and/or minimize stretch marks.
  • There are several essential oils to help with ailments that make pregnancy not so pleasant, such as, constipation, hemorrhoids, flatulence, indigestion and nausea.
  • Stress has been linked to retarded fetal development, and highter risks of heart disease and diabetes in later life.
  • Women who used relaxation techniques, such as massage therapy to lower blood pressure, fostered a healthier in-utero environment and calmer babies.
  • Massage reduces pain, relaxes expectant mothers and can hasten delivery.
  • Women are less depressed with a partner massaging them during labor, experience less labor pain, and have lower stress and anxiety levels.  The touch of the partner has been shown to have a more therapeutic value than that of a nurse midwife.

Infant Massage/Training

This massage is done with the caretaker of the infant.  Infant massage is a hands on training (you get to do the massage while I explain and give examples).  I will teach you which strokes are appropriate for which age groups and which essential oils to use, (such as when they are colicky, fussy etc.). As the child grows other oils are appropriate.

Infants benefit from touch therapy in many ways, including enhanced growth and development.

Massage helps children overcome emotional trauma and improve their condition in diseases such as asthma and diabetes.

Touch is important to all of us.  Its value in health, development, and healing should encourage all of us to make touch an important part of our daily lives.

Touch and massage improved the nighttime sleep behavior of infants and toddlers, as well as increased their daytime alertness and wakefulness. Touch helps calm & relax as "mind clutter" subsides, increasing body awareness.

  • Helps children feel a sense of warmth and security
  • Helps infants' to regulate their own response to stress
  • Aids in infants mental development in the first six months of life
  • Stimulates and strengthens respiration, circulation and gastrointestinal functions

Fathers:
Massage potentially benefits all infants and those close to them.  Massage therapy can serve in facilitating father-infant bonding.  Babies gained more weight and enjoyed a better relationship with their fathers. Fathers tended to have better self-esteem as a result of feeling more involved with their babies.  Infants greeted their fathers with more eye contact, smiling, vocalizing, reaching and orienting responses.

Siblings:
Young children may enjoy a care giving role, while discovering a way to demonstrate affection for the infant. There are specific essential oils to be used for colic, fussy babies, wrinklied newborns and other common newborn ailments

Grandparents who massaged babies had lower levels of stress hormones (urinary epinephrine and norepinephrive and salivary cortisol) significantly improved health, less depression, improved lifestyles and made fewer trips to the doctor’s office.

Attentive touch helps dementia patients.  Nursing home residents with dementia slept better and were less disorented after receiving focused touching or stroking of hands, arms, shoulder, upper back, feet and legs.  Massage done fully clothed with patients permission.  The improved sleep patterns can have a profoundly positive impact on the entire nursing home community.

After working with patients for 4 weeks it was easier to dress and move patient with improved co-operation from the patient.

In only 15 minutes:

  • Think more clearly
  • Increase productivity
  • Relieve headaches
  • Reduce stress

Slouching at a desk for prolonged periods often results in lower back pain.  Repetitive motion injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, are common among office workers.  A 15 to 20 minute “stress-buster” massage relieves tension in neck, back and shoulder muscles, reducing irritability and increasing productivity.

Convenience
Seated massage is performed in the worksplace.  Your employees will be seated upright on the special massage chair and will remain fully clothed.  No oils are used, so there is no need for them to be concerned about stain on clothing.  The session generally lasts from 15 to 20 minutes.  The chair is lightweight and portable, enabling it to be set up in virtually any office or break room.

Benefits
Studies by the Touch Research Institute in Florida show that the benefits of seated massage have quick results.  Immediately after massage sessions, the subjects experienced a change in brain waves in the direction of heightened alertness and better performance on math problems (completed in less time with fewer errors).

At the end of a five week study period, subjects reported reduced job stress and elevated moods.  This was in addition to the ususal benefits of massage, relief of muscular tension, revitalized energy and a stronger immune system.

The study’s findings are significant in that the International Labour Organization stated in its 1993 World Labour Report that job stress costs the U.S. economy $200 billion annually through diminished productivity, compensation claims, absenteeism, health insurance and direct expenses.

Techniques Used:

Seated massage, utilizing acupressure and Swedish massage to relieve tension. Though beginning at a slower pace, the work moves a little faster as the practitioner proceeds.  The session ends with quick, revitalizing strokes in order to bring the client back into the real world of work.

$1.75 per minute, a minimum of 2 hour contract

Massage can be used to alleviate many childhood and adolescent ailments, as well as the stresses associated with growing up. Careful sensitive massage can help ease the transition from childhood to adulthood tremendously. Post-Traumatic Stress in Children

ADD/ADHD
ADD affects 3 – 6% of all youth.  It is more often found in boys.  In this study, hyperactivity was reduced.  Massage is an important tool in the management of ADHD along with other therapies or when other therapies don't work or have negative side effects.  This study was supported by the NIMH.

Distorted Body Image
A study done in 1994 found that adolescent girls hospitalized for bulimia had less distorted body images after being massaged twice weekly for 5 weeks.

It is important in this time of extreme stress that our children get appropriate touch, to be in touch with themselves and better able to communicate with others what they feel.
